In this post I’ll be sharing my love of DIY face oils and how to successfully make and use one for your skin. I also am sharing my current DIY face oil that contains a secret ingredient to boost collagen production. Whether you’re dry or oily, this is a great recipe for anti aging.
If I could only choose one skincare product to use for the rest of my life it would be a diy face oil, no question about it. Using oil has transformed my skin more than any other product I have EVER used. Oil has the ability to thoroughly feed dry skin while balancing oily skin. A natural face oil gives the skin support during aging. The great news is, making your own facial oil can be as simple as choosing the right oil for your skin and applying it morning and night. Or, you can explore anti aging additives, essential oils and create a blend of natural oils all in one bottle to treat concerns like aging, dry skin and inflammation.
I saw a huge difference in my skin when I changed from using face lotions to face oils. As we age, skin typically becomes dryer. The dryer the skin, the easier it is to wrinkle. By using different oils, essential oils and anti aging additives and botanicals you can naturally slow and reduce the signs of aging as well as encourage collagen production. Oil based skincare is an effective way to support your skin. Along with creating a facial oil blend that your skin benefits from, the oil cleansing method can be beneficial when it comes to balancing oil production, detoxing and replenishing the skin all at the same time.
Benefits of a DIY Face Oil:
- Moisturize the skin
- Soften the appearance of fine lines
- Balance oil production
- Even skin tone
- Gentle and comforting to skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
- Support mature skin
- Soothe sensitive skin
- Long Shelf Life (no preservative needed)
- No fillers like water or emulsifiers needed
- Customizable to skin’s unique needs
How to Use a DIY Face Oil:
One extra perk of face oils is that they do not contain water so it takes way less face oil than it does a face cream which is about 50% water. It takes maybe a 1/2 dropper full or 1-2 pumps of your face oil to cover your entire face. If you use too much, you’ll find your skin will only soak in as much as it needs and you’ll be left with oily skin and wasted product. Your 1 oz bottle of face oil will last way longer than even a 2 oz jar of face cream.
The best way to use a face oil is right after a toner or water based serum. There is value in the water that is in a face cream. The water acts as a vehicle, driving the oil deeper into the skin. Sometimes a face oil can have a hard time penetrating the skin without the water which is where a water based toner or serum comes in handy. I personally prefer using a spray on toner.
Apply 1-2 pumps or about 3-7 drops of a face oil to the palm of your hand. Gently pat or press the oil into your skin. Allow to absorb before applying an eye serum. I typically apply less face oil in the morning when I’m wearing makeup and a bit more in the evening for added nourishment.
Don’t forget to bring the oil down the neck and chest too!
Popular DIY Face Oil Ingredients:
- Jojoba Oil
- Argan Oil
- Rosehip Seed Oil
- Avocado Oil
- Sweet Almond Oil
- Grapeseed Oil
- Sea Buckthorn Oil
- Tamanu Oil
- Olive Oil
- Squalane
- Vitamin E Oil
- Essential Oils
- Anti Aging Additives like CoQ10, Co2llageneer
Where to Get the Best Ingredients:
I always prefer to get natural plant oils from Mountain Rose Herbs. Their quality is unmatched. I like their essential oils as well. However, you can get decent quality, organic oils on Amazon. I also like Plant Therapy essential oils which you can get on Amazon but I prefer shopping from their website since they have sales and you can trust the shelf life when buying directly from the source.
When it comes to botanicals and additives, I always use Lotion Crafter. Their customer service is great and they provide a decent amount of information on each item. There are very few extras you can add to a face oil because most of them are water based and won’t mix with oil. I love using coQ10 or Q-MAX in DIY face oils. In fact, my Sea Buckthorn coQ10 Facial Oil is one of my most popular recipes and I sell it on my Etsy shop! Today, I’m including a new anti aging ingredients I just discovered called Co2llageneer to encourage collagen production. You can read more about it below. Both these ingredients are a great added bonus to any face oil!
I also always recommend using glass bottles. I use treatment pump glass bottles or dropper bottles. It just depends on your preference when it comes to which dispenser you choose.
Facial Oil Vs. Facial Cream:
Many people prefer a facial cream over a facial oil. I did before I started reaping the benefits of a facial oil. It is lovely to have a fluffy, white cream but inorder for that cream to have that wonderful texture, emulsifiers, preservatives and thickeners must be added, not to mention water. Creams can contain up to 80% water!
Face oils are pure. They don’t require a preservative or thickeners and they contain no water. You use only 2-6 drops of an oil and 100% of the oil is used. You need quite a bit more cream than oil and while water is beneficial to the skin, you are getting a small amount of healthy, beneficial oils. Needless to say, there is a lot of bang for your buck when using a face oil.

Collagen Blue Tansy Face Oil:
Now that you have all the facts on DIY face oils, why don’t we just make one?! I will break down each ingredient so you can see exactly how beneficial DIY face oils can be.
Co2llageneer: Co2llageneer is an anti-aging and firming ingredient that stimulates the production of collagen helping the skin with elasticity and firmness. According to Lotion Crafter it helps to remodel the facial contour. It is made from lupeol which is extracted from sweet white lupin seeds. The lupeol is solubilized in sunflower oil and vitamin E. The benefits of Co2llageneer are increased skin firmness and elasticity, remodeling of the facial profile and support of the skin during the aging process.
Blue Tansy Essential Oil: Blue tansy is an incredible essential oil for the skin. It has powerful anti inflammatory properties to help calm the skin, reduce redness and promote healing. It is particularly helpful for burns. It also helps smooth the skin. It has antihistamine properties as well as antibacterial and antifungal power. I love that it helps get blood flowing and where blood flows, there is healthy skin tissue. Blue tansy is a great ingredient to add for any skin type but I love it for acne-prone skin. Just remember, a little bit goes a long way due to its strong scent as well as bright blue hue. We also used blue tansy in the Young Living Valor Dupe Recipe.
Squalane: Squalane is one of my favorite things to add to DIY skincare. It’s out of the box because it isn’t technically an oil. It comes from olives and acts as a protective barrier while penetrating deeply. It’s not greasy and doesn’t leave a residue but it softens and hydrates skin nicely.
Baobab Oil: I chose baobab because it is light, absorbs quickly and is HIGH in vitamin C. Plus it has more antioxidants than goji berries or even matcha!
Vitamin E Oil: Vitamin E oil is a powerful antioxidant and helps moisturize the skin. It also fights free radicals that cause aging. Adding vitamin E to a face oil can help prolong the shelf life as well.
Lavender Essential Oil: I have added lavender essential oil to balance the strong scent of blue tansy. Lavender oil can be omitted but it is great at accelerating healing as well as reducing inflammation in the skin.
DIY Face Oil Recipe:
This DIY facial oil recipe is appropriate for all skin types if you stick to my chosen base oils, baobab and squalane. Both are non-comedogenic and light. Lavender and blue tansy are great for soothing, healing and reducing inflammation that comes with acne. It will be a great addition to your skincare routine.
Making a natural facial oil is as simple as adding your chosen ingredients to a glass bottle, replacing the cap and shaking. DIY face oils are one of the most simple skincare products you can make. There are no kitchen supplies or equipment needed except perhaps a small funnel if you choose.
Materials
- 1/8 tsp. Co2llageneer
- 1 drop Blue Tansy Essential Oil
- 3 tsp. Baobab Oil
- 2 tsp. Squalane
- 1/2 tsp. Vitamin E oil
- 2 drops Lavender Essential Oil
Tools
- 1 oz glass bottle
- Small Funnel
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a 1 oz glass bottle.
- Replace cap and shake.
Notes
- Use morning and night after cleansing and toning.
Ingredient Substitutions:
- If you’d prefer to not buy baobab oil, rosehip seed oil is also high in vitamin C and has a whole set of anti aging properties of it’s own. Avocado oil is a great oil if you suffer from dry skin. Jojoba oil is excellent for any skin type but really great for oily or acne prone skin since it is closest to skin’s sebum.
- Squalane can be skipped if you prefer to not add it. You can use all baobab.
- If you’d like to skip the blue tansy, carrot seed oil is one of my favorite essential oils for anti aging. I would only use 1-2 drops in this face oil because it does smell like carrots! If you are leaning more towards anti aging but with acne, tea tree oil is the best (and very gentle) oil for clearing and healing acne. You can use 2-4 drops.
I hope I’ve told you all you needed to know to venture into the world of face oils. Incorporating face oils into my skin care routine has changed my skin. I no longer deal with rough dry patches during the dry winter months. My skin looks rejuvenated and has never been so soft. As we age, skin produces less natural oil and it’s so important to replenish the skin thoroughly and regularly. Face oils are so incredibly easy to make and require nothing but a blend of natural ingredients. My simple DIY face oil recipe takes minutes to make yet will go a long way when supporting, nourishing and beautifying your skin.
xx, Jenni
